the seven counties rambler

Linlithgow to Linlithgow Circular

Departing from Linlithgow, Edinburgh, Carlisle

The journey begins at Linlithgow, where guests will board behind a pair of English Electric Class 20s. Our route will take us to our second pick-up point at Edinburgh Waverley, from where we will depart via the Edinburgh Suburban line and then onto the West Coast Main Line (WCML). As we progress, we'll navigate around Midcalder Junction, diverting westward towards Glasgow. Continuing on through the Glasgow South West line, we will make our way to Carlisle, enveloped in the stunning beauty of southern Scotland's landscapes. This section of the journey will allow travelers to enjoy vistas of charming towns such as Kilmarnock and Dumfries.

Upon arrival at Carlisle, we will replace our original pair of Class 20 locomotives with a second pair. This will give customers the rare opportunity to sample all four Class 20s (20096, 20107, 20118 & 20132) that LSL own. Departing Carlisle, our path unfolds onto the renowned Settle and Carlisle Line. This route is famous for its breathtaking scenery and historic viaducts, establishing itself as one of the UK's most scenic railway experiences. A highlight of this segment includes traversing Ais Gill, the highest point on the line at 1,169 feet above sea level, where sweeping views of the surrounding area await. Chief among the sights will be the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct, with 24 magnificent arches presenting stunning panoramas of the Yorkshire Dales, framed by the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough.

Following our passage from Hellifield to Preston via Clitheroe, we will set our sights toward Shap. Renowned for its rugged landscapes, Shap presents a challenging climb up to its summit, providing an exhilarating experience for both passengers and locomotive alike.

As we return to Carlisle once more, we will witness another locomotive change. The Class 20 will conclude their service, making way for a pair of Class 37 diesel locomotives, including the SRPS-owned 37403 ‘Isle of Mull’. Our homeward journey will commence via the scenic Tyne Valley Line, leading us towards Newcastle. Here, we will then proceed to the recently reopened Blyth and Tyne Line, allowing us to participate in this milestone return of passenger services. The day culminates as we travel north up the East Coast Main Line (ECML).

This tour promises a unique blend of historical charm, engineering marvels, and stunning natural beauty, making it an essential experience for both railway enthusiasts and travellers alike.
